This exercise can be played in a circle with several players, or as a pair exercise with two.
A story is told sentence by sentence, with each player saying one sentence at a time.
The first sentence of the story is a simple introductory line.
After that, the sentences always alternate between "Fortunately..." and "Unfortunately..." (or also: "Sadly..."), so first something positive, then something negative.
Even so, what has been said before always still applies. A later sentence must not ignore or erase what came before.
The goal is to find an appropriate response to each sentence, ideally using whatever comes most naturally to mind.
As in any story, reintroducing things that were mentioned at the beginning is always good for the narrative.
Example:
The players form a circle:
- Player A: "Yesterday I got on a plane to New York City."
- Player B: "Unfortunately, my flight ran into turbulence."
- Player C: "Fortunately, it didn't last very long."
- Player D: "Unfortunately, the turbulence caused an engine failure."
- Player E: "Fortunately, there were parachutes on board."
- Player F: "Unfortunately, there weren't enough for everyone."
- and so on...
